Flinders was a captain in the navy, hydrographer and discoverer. On 24 Jan. 1801 he was given command of HM Sloop Investigator, and was subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander, for the purpose of surveying the coast of Australia. Mathew Flinders was born in Lincolnshire in 1774. After mastering geometry and navigation he joined the navy in 1790. In 1795 he sailed to Port Jackson New South Wales where he undertook survey work along the coast of Australia. As commander of Investigator he continued this work .
